Jake White Gives Willie le Roux Another Chance at Flyhalf Position
After admitting to his errors in the previous game against the Stormers, Bulls director of rugby Jake White has decided to give veteran Springbok player Willie le Roux another opportunity at the number 10 position in their upcoming United Rugby Championship (URC) match against the Sharks at Loftus this Saturday.
Le Roux, a two-time Springbok World Cup-winning fullback, was brought off the bench to play at flyhalf in the Jukskei derby against the Lions in January. With Johan Goosen sidelined due to injury for up to 10 weeks, the experienced fullback was entrusted with starting at flyhalf against the Stormers last weekend.
Following the Stormers game, White remarked that Le Roux displayed moments of excellence on the field but also moments where he seemed out of place, resembling more of a fullback transitioning to the flyhalf position.
White acknowledged that it was unjust to pass judgment on Le Roux so quickly in a new role, especially against a formidable attacking team like the Stormers.
White Provides Video Feedback to Le Roux
White shared that he had shown Le Roux a video of his performance, pointing out instances where his positioning was off. He emphasized the importance of consistency and adaptability in the flyhalf position.
Despite the initial challenges, White expressed confidence in Le Roux’s ability to adapt and improve as he gains more experience in the role.
Regarding the unchanged backline for the Sharks game, White reasoned that it was fair to give Le Roux time to adjust, considering his last regular stint at flyhalf was with Japanese side Toyota Verblitz in 2022 and 2023.
White acknowledged the difficulty of transitioning from a fullback to a flyhalf, especially in high-pressure matches against tough opponents. He highlighted the partnership between Le Roux and scrumhalf Embrose Papier as a key factor in enhancing the team’s performance.
White emphasized the importance of improved communication and maintaining shape in the backline to avoid similar mistakes made in the previous game against the Stormers.
With White’s guidance and support, Le Roux is poised to grow into the flyhalf role and contribute significantly to the Bulls’ success in the URC.
