Bafana Bafana Coach Hugo Broos Eyes 2026 Fifa World Cup Qualification
Hugo Broos, the head coach of Bafana Bafana, is optimistic about South Africa’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 Fifa World Cup finals. Broos, who represented Belgium as a player at the 1986 Fifa World Cup in Mexico, expressed his excitement at the prospect of ending his coaching career at the prestigious tournament.
After securing a 3-0 victory over South Sudan in their final Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match, Bafana Bafana finished on top of Group K. The win in front of a packed Cape Town Stadium marked a successful year for Broos and his team.
Bafana’s Impressive Achievements
South Africa’s national team will be competing in the AFCON finals in Morocco next year, aiming to build on their bronze medal finish in the previous tournament held in the Ivory Coast. Broos has made history as the first Bafana coach to qualify for consecutive Africa Cup of Nations finals.
Looking ahead, the focus for Bafana Bafana shifts to the Fifa World Cup, with Broos emphasizing the team’s potential for qualification.
Broos Believes in Bafana’s Chances
Broos stated, “There is a big chance we can qualify for the World Cup. To end my career as a coach at the World Cup would be fantastic, not only for me but also for the country and the players who have shown tremendous growth over the past few years.”
South Africa’s last appearance in the Fifa World Cup finals was in 2002 under the guidance of Carlos Queiroz. Broos acknowledges the challenges ahead but remains confident in Bafana Bafana’s abilities.
2026 World Cup Qualifying Campaign
Currently tied at the top of Group C in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers with Benin and Rwanda, Bafana Bafana have seven points from four matches. The team will face Lesotho at home and Benin away in the upcoming fixtures in March.
Despite a four-month break between matches, Broos is optimistic about the team’s readiness, with players staying in shape through PSL games. The coach remains hopeful that Bafana Bafana will continue their success and secure a spot in the highly anticipated 2026 Fifa World Cup finals.
