A tragic incident unfolded outside Brazil’s Supreme Court when a man took his own life with a bomb after attempting to enter the building. This shocking event has raised security concerns just days before the G20 summit, where global leaders will convene in Rio de Janeiro.
The first explosion occurred in a parking lot near the court building, followed by a second blast in front of the court where the man’s body was discovered. Federal District Vice Governor Celina Leao revealed that initial reports suggested the man had used explosives on himself after trying to gain access to the Supreme Court. Furthermore, an explosion in a nearby car belonging to the man added to the chaos and confusion.
While authorities are hoping this was the act of a “lone wolf,” they are unable to confirm this theory at the moment. The police are treading cautiously as they work to identify the deceased man and address the potential threat of additional explosives. The Plaza of the Three Powers, where the explosions occurred, is a significant square in Brasilia that links the key buildings of Brazil’s federal government.
This incident is reminiscent of the unrest that erupted on January 8 last year when supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro vandalized the buildings in protest of his electoral defeat. To investigate the explosions, the police dispatched a bomb squad equipped with an explosive disposal robot to the square. Fortunately, the Supreme Court justices had just concluded their session and were safely evacuated before the blasts.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva had already left the executive palace before the explosions took place. The timing of the incident and its proximity to the upcoming G20 summit have raised concerns about security in Brazil’s capital. As the investigation unfolds, authorities are working diligently to ensure the safety of all citizens and visitors in the city.
