Lood de Jager Signs Five-Year Rugby Deal in Japan
South African rugby star Lood de Jager, aged 32, has recently expressed his excitement about signing a five-year contract to continue playing in Japan. After three successful seasons with the Wild Knights, de Jager is looking forward to the two additional seasons on his contract.
Reflecting on his time in Japan, de Jager mentioned how he has developed his game and gained valuable experience during his tenure with the Wild Knights, following three seasons playing for Sale Sharks in England.
Financial and Family Considerations
In explaining his decision to move overseas, de Jager highlighted the financial opportunities and the well-being of his family as key factors. He emphasized the importance of being happy off the field, as it translates to his performance on the field.
“Especially with the wife and kids. If you aren’t happy off-field, it really translates to on the field,” de Jager said.
He also expressed his desire to experience playing in Europe, testing himself against top competition in the Champions Cup and Premiership, as well as in Super Rugby against teams from Argentina, New Zealand, and Australia.
De Jager remains open about his future, stating that anything could happen in two years. He is committed to continuing his development as a player while ensuring the happiness of his family.
Rugby Standard in Japan
De Jager noted the increasing standard of rugby in Japan, with world-class players and coaches emphasizing a more running-focused style of play. He encouraged young South African players to consider the United Rugby Championship as a platform to showcase their talent.
Despite the rise in quality of rugby in Japan, de Jager expressed his joy at rejoining the Springbok squad after being sidelined due to injury since July 2023.
“The easy part was being with good friends again. Seeing them again and being able to train with them, spend day to day in camp. It was great seeing the guys again and talking about old stories,” de Jager said.
