Matteo Berrettini Upsets Top Seed Alexander Zverev at Monte Carlo Masters

In a surprising turn of events, top seed Alexander Zverev was knocked out in his opening match at the Monte Carlo Masters by Italy’s Matteo Berrettini. The match ended with a scoreline of 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 in favor of Berrettini.

Since his defeat in the Australian Open final earlier this year, Zverev has been struggling to find his form, winning only six out of 12 matches. The world number two managed to clinch the first set against Berrettini, but the Italian fought back strongly to level the match by breaking Zverev’s serve in the second set.

Berrettini continued his momentum by breaking Zverev’s serve again in the final set, eventually securing the victory despite some tense moments. A thrilling 48-shot rally in the decisive moments of the match showcased the resilience of both players.

With this victory, Berrettini advances to the round of 16 where he will face either Lorenzo Musetti or Jiri Lehecka. The Italian has been in exceptional form on clay, winning 17 of his last 18 matches on the surface.

Despite his recent success on clay courts, Berrettini has been plagued by injuries that have kept him out of the French Open since 2021. On the other hand, Zverev will look to regroup as he prepares for his next tournament in Munich, hoping to bounce back from his early exit in Monte Carlo.
