The Last Stage of Tour of Rwanda Abandoned Due to Heavy Rain
The final stage of the Tour of Rwanda, which was set to take place in Kigali, the site of this year’s cycling world championships, was abruptly abandoned on Sunday. The decision to halt the race was made by officials from cycling’s governing body, the UCI, citing unsafe road conditions caused by heavy rain.
The organisers of the event released a statement explaining the situation, “Due to unforeseen weather conditions that made the roads slippery, the president of the UCI jury decided to stop the last stage of the Tour of Rwanda with one lap remaining.”
The unexpected end to the race led to Fabien Doubey, a 31-year-old French cyclist representing TotalEnergies, claiming his first professional victory. Doubey crossed the finish line six seconds ahead of Eritrean rider Henok Mulubrhan.
