Ayatollah Khamenei says Iran will never bow to US over nuclear standoff

Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, made a bold statement on Sunday, declaring that the ongoing issues between Washington and Tehran are “unsolvable.” He emphasized that Iran will not back down in the face of pressure from the US in their nuclear standoff.

The tensions between the two nations escalated after America’s involvement in Israel’s 12-day war against Iran’s nuclear program in June. Khamenei defended Iran’s decision to freeze nuclear talks, stating that negotiations are no longer an option.

“They want Iran to be obedient to America,” Khamenei asserted, adding that the Iranian nation will resist any attempts to dictate their actions. He also defended the use of anti-American slogans in Iran, including the infamous “Death to America!” chants in the parliament, as a reflection of the harsh reality of US-Iranian relations.

The breakdown of direct diplomacy between the US and Iran occurred following joint airstrikes by the US and Israel on Tehran’s nuclear facilities. Iran has vehemently denied accusations of developing atomic weapons and has expelled the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) from the country.

Pressure is mounting on Iran to allow the IAEA back into the country to investigate the aftermath of the conflict and locate the missing enriched uranium. Despite Khamenei’s defiance, there are reports that Tehran is willing to engage in nonproliferation discussions with the UK to avoid UN sanctions.

Britain, France, and Germany have issued warnings that they may reinstate heavy sanctions against Iran through the UN’s snapback mechanism if Tehran does not cooperate with the IAEA by the end of August. There are also discussions within Iran about scaling back the enrichment program from 60% to 20%.

Overall, the situation between Iran and the West remains tense, with no clear resolution in sight. The defiance of Iran’s leadership, coupled with international pressure, sets the stage for a complex diplomatic standoff in the coming weeks.
