The International Central Gospel Church (ICGC) in the Ashanti Region is making a significant impact on mental health through its annual commitment to supporting the psychiatric unit of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi. One of the church’s key initiatives is the ‘Life Walk’, an annual event aimed at raising funds and awareness for mental health initiatives.
The recent ‘Life Walk’ event, spearheaded by the General Overseer of the church, Pastor Mensa Otabil, drew a large crowd of congregants, health advocates, and well-wishers. Participants, clad in branded T-shirts, embarked on a 12-kilometer walk through the streets of Kwadaso, symbolizing a unified effort towards healing and hope for mental health.
What started as a church activity has evolved into a regional movement, shedding light on the pressing need for mental health support in Ghana. The event garnered overwhelming support from church members and pastors, underscoring the community’s commitment to making a difference in the lives of those struggling with mental health issues.
After the walk and an intensive aerobics session, Rev Sylvanus Sowah-Odotei, the Regional Overseer in Ashanti, expressed his gratitude for the turnout and the unwavering support from fellow pastors. He emphasized the importance of addressing mental health issues collectively, stating, “Mental health is a critical issue that affects individuals, families, and communities. This walk is a testament to our dedication to creating a supportive environment for those in need.”
Dr. John Paul Omuojine, the head of the Psychiatric Unit at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, commended ICGC for its continued support in advancing mental health in Ghana. He stressed the significance of good mental health in enabling individuals to cope with daily stress, reach their full potential, and contribute positively to society. Dr. Omuojine also highlighted the detrimental effects of poor mental health, such as depression and anxiety, and emphasized the importance of seeking help from mental health professionals.
In conclusion, the ‘Life Walk’ organized by ICGC serves as a beacon of hope and healing for individuals grappling with mental health challenges. By raising awareness, reducing stigma, and advocating for support, the church is playing a vital role in promoting mental well-being in the community.
