Arsenal held by Brentford as faint title hopes fade

Liverpool is on the brink of being crowned English champions, needing just nine points from their last seven games to secure the title. Meanwhile, Arsenal’s hopes of a late surge for the Premier League trophy were dashed as Brentford managed to snatch a late equalizer at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners, who were coming off a sensational 3-0 victory over Real Madrid in the Champions League, were unable to capitalize on their momentum. Despite Thomas Partey giving Arsenal the lead in the second half, Yoane Wissa’s goal for Brentford left them trailing Liverpool by 10 points.

As Arsenal’s focus shifted towards the Champions League, manager Mikel Arteta made five changes to the starting lineup in preparation for their upcoming clash with Real Madrid. The atmosphere at the Emirates Stadium was subdued compared to the electrifying energy of their midweek European triumph.

Brentford, sensing an opportunity to secure their first win at Arsenal since 1938, put up a strong fight. Kristoffer Ajer came close to scoring, only to be denied by Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya. Kieran Tierney thought he had found the back of the net, but his goal was ruled out by the new semi-automated offside system in use.

Despite Arsenal’s dominance, it was Brentford who found the equalizer through Wissa’s well-crafted goal. Arsenal’s attempts to regain the lead fell short, with Bukayo Saka missing crucial chances in the closing stages of the game.

Ultimately, Arsenal’s title hopes were all but extinguished, with Liverpool firmly in control of the race for the championship. As the Gunners turn their attention to the Champions League, their focus will now be on making a deep run in Europe’s elite competition.
