Being kind and considerate is a wonderful trait, but there is a fine line between being helpful and being a people-pleaser. Constantly putting others’ needs before your own can lead to stress, burnout, and resentment. Here are five signs that indicate you may be overextending yourself:

  1. You Struggle to Say No
Do you find it challenging to decline requests, even when you are exhausted or overwhelmed? People-pleasers often have a fear of appearing rude or unkind, leading them to say yes to things they shouldn’t. Learning to set boundaries and saying no when necessary is essential for your well-being.

  2. You Feel Guilty Prioritising Yourself
If you feel guilty when focusing on your own needs and prioritize others over yourself, you may be overextending yourself. Remember that self-care is not selfish but necessary for your mental and physical health.

  3. You Go Out of Your Way to Avoid Conflict
Avoiding expressing your true opinions to keep the peace or apologizing unnecessarily can indicate that you prioritize harmony over your own feelings. It’s okay to have different opinions and stand up for yourself in a healthy way.

  4. You Take on More Than You Can Handle
If your schedule is filled with obligations you don’t genuinely want to do, you might be saying yes too often. It’s essential to assess what truly matters to you and prioritize your well-being over obliging others.

  5. You Feel Resentful Towards Others
Constantly giving without receiving support in return can lead to feelings of resentment and being unappreciated. Setting boundaries and expecting mutual respect in relationships is crucial for maintaining a healthy balance.

Breaking free from the people-pleasing cycle involves setting boundaries, prioritizing your well-being, and learning to say no when necessary. Remember, you deserve to prioritize yourself just as much as you prioritize others. If any of these signs resonate with you, it’s time to make changes for your own well-being.
