The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Joseph Ikpea of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the victor of the Edo Central senatorial by-election.
In the early hours of Sunday, returning officer Kingsley Omo-Iwoze announced the results of the election. Omo-Iwoze said that Ikpea received 105,129 votes, winning against Joe Okojie of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 15,146 votes.
Ikpea attributed his success to God and the constituents of the district, “who prioritised vision over sentiment and progress over traditional politics.”
“This victory reaffirms the people’s faith in our capacity to deliver. I will not disappoint them,” Ikpea said, praising Governor Monday Okpebholo as “a leader of exceptional qualities, strategic, selfless, and deeply connected to the people”.
He committed to concentrating on legislation and initiatives in infrastructure, youth empowerment, education, healthcare, and the enhancement of traditional institutions.
The vacancy for the Edo Central seat arose after Okpebholo, who previously occupied the role, was elected governor of the state in September 2024.
