Hollywood’s “Anora” Dominates Awards Season
In a stunning turn of events, Hollywood’s producers and directors have crowned “Anora” as the greatest movie of the year, setting the stage for a potential sweep at the upcoming Oscar Academy Awards.
Following its recent win of the top US Critics’ Prize, Sean Baker’s black comedy has continued its winning streak by clinching the prestigious Directors Guild of America and Producers Guild of America top honors.
Accepting the accolade at a star-studded Beverly Hills DGA event, 53-year-old independent filmmaker Sean Baker expressed his disbelief, stating, “My imposter syndrome is skyrocketing right now!”
“Pulling off a $6 million film shot on location in New York City in 2023 was no small feat,” Baker added, giving credit to his dedicated team of producers for their support.

Despite winning the Palme d’Or at Cannes earlier in the year, “Anora” has faced stiff competition from films like “Emilia Perez” in the race for Oscar nominations.
However, with recent victories at the Critics Choice Awards and the DGA and PGA ceremonies, “Anora” is now considered a frontrunner for the coveted Best Picture award at the upcoming Academy Awards on March 2.
Renowned director Christopher Nolan, last year’s DGA winner, presented Baker with his award, joking about the rigors of Hollywood’s relentless awards season.
Expressing gratitude for being able to pursue his passion for filmmaking since childhood, Baker also credited his mother for her unwavering support, although he humorously noted her avoidance of his more provocative works.
Historically, nineteen out of twenty-one DGA winners have gone on to win the Oscar for Best Director in the same year, underscoring the significance of “Anora’s” recent triumphs.
Meanwhile, the DGA honored “Nickel Boys,” directed by RaMell Ross, as the best film from a first-time filmmaker, highlighting diverse voices in the industry.
In a separate event in Los Angeles, “Anora” continued its winning streak by claiming the PGA top prize, further solidifying its status as the film to beat this awards season.
