Andy Beshear on how Dems can hammer Trump over tariffs

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has been vocal about the potential negative impacts of the Trump administration’s tariffs on his state’s economy. With industries like bourbon, auto, and aerospace at risk, Beshear has been working to raise awareness about the devastating effects these tariffs could have on both Kentucky and the entire country.

In a recent interview with POLITICO, Beshear emphasized the need for a public information campaign to highlight the consequences of Trump’s trade agenda. He believes that Democrats should make it clear that Trump alone is responsible for the decision to impose tariffs, which could ultimately lead to increased costs for Americans. Beshear, who is seen as a potential presidential contender in 2028, is actively seeking to raise his national profile through media appearances and the launch of a new podcast.

When asked about his trade vision, Beshear pointed out Kentucky’s recent economic growth and success in attracting private sector investment and creating new jobs. He expressed concerns about the impact of Trump’s tariffs on Kentucky’s economy, especially in light of the state’s reliance on foreign direct investment. Beshear believes that trade is a complex issue and that targeted tariffs can be effective in certain situations, but across-the-board tariffs are likely to do more harm than good.

Regarding the auto tariffs and their potential impact on the Toyota manufacturing plant in Georgetown, Beshear highlighted the long-term nature of investments in manufacturing facilities. He expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of aggressive tariffs in promoting domestic investment and warned of the short-term pain that consumers could experience as a result.

Beshear also commented on the lack of Republican support for Trump’s tariffs, noting that even Kentucky’s Republican senators have spoken out against them. He believes that the increasing economic hardship faced by American families due to the tariffs should be a breaking point for Republican support of Trump’s trade policies.

In terms of leverage for Democratic governors, Beshear emphasized the importance of speaking out and engaging with constituents to raise awareness about the negative impacts of Trump’s tariffs. He encouraged individuals to share their stories of how rising prices are affecting them and to put pressure on policymakers to reconsider their trade agenda.

Overall, Beshear is committed to advocating for policies that support economic growth and prosperity for all Americans, while also holding the Trump administration accountable for the consequences of their trade decisions.
