The African National Congress (ANC) has announced that it will be taking disciplinary action against senior party members Malusi Gigaba and suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu for making disparaging comments about the party’s national executive committee (NEC). The ANC spokesperson, Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri, stated that their conduct goes against the party’s internal communication protocols and undermines the fundamental discipline of the movement.
Gigaba, in an interview with the Sunday Times, criticized the NEC for failing to meet its responsibilities and questioned the ANC’s decision to enter into a coalition with the Democratic Alliance after losing the general elections. Mchunu, on the other hand, raised concerns about the ANC’s relevance if they were not successful in the upcoming local government elections.
Bhengu-Motsiri expressed that Gigaba and Mchunu’s comments are damaging to the image, credibility, and unity of the ANC. She emphasized that such actions only serve the agenda of counter-revolution and weaken the people’s confidence in the party.
The ANC has instructed Gigaba and Mchunu to refrain from making any further unsanctioned public statements. Gigaba, known for his support of former President Jacob Zuma during the state capture period, has also criticized ANC veterans for calling on Zuma to step down. Mchunu, who is currently on special leave due to corruption allegations, has denied any wrongdoing.
The ANC’s renewal program aims to promote unity, discipline, and revolutionary morality within the party. Bhengu-Motsiri reiterated that no comrade will be exempt from the organization’s discipline, which demands loyalty and adherence to the party’s principles.
In conclusion, the ANC is committed to upholding its core values and will not tolerate any behavior that undermines the party’s unity and integrity. Gigaba and Mchunu have been warned to adhere to party protocols and refrain from making any further detrimental public statements.
