Manchester United Must Win Europa League, Says Ruben Amorim
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has issued a stark warning to his squad as they face the daunting task of redeeming a disappointing season by clinching the Europa League title.
Following a recent loss in the Premier League to Brentford, United headed into their Europa League semi-final second leg against Athletic Bilbao. The 4-3 defeat against Brentford left them languishing in 15th place, putting them at risk of their lowest final standing since the 1973-74 season.
Amorim emphasized the magnitude of the situation, stating, “We, as a club, need to understand the significant responsibility we have in this moment to win the Europa League. We must prepare our squad for different competitions.”
United’s winless streak in the league has now extended to six matches, with a 4-1 deficit against Brentford before late goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo salvaged some pride for the struggling team.
Despite Amorim’s mixed league record with United, winning only six of his 24 matches, the team’s 3-0 victory over Bilbao in the first leg highlighted the potential route to securing a Champions League spot through the Europa League.
In preparation for the crucial second leg against Bilbao at Old Trafford, Amorim made eight changes for the match against Brentford, opting to rest key players like Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire, signaling the team’s focus on European competition.
