Carlos Alcaraz Stunned by David Goffin in Miami Open Upset
In a surprising turn of events, world number three Carlos Alcaraz faced an early elimination from the prestigious Miami Open on Friday. The Belgian veteran David Goffin pulled off a remarkable comeback to secure a thrilling 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 victory at the Hard Rock Stadium.
Goffin, aged 34, had previously defeated Alcaraz three years ago in Astana, and he once again proved to be a formidable opponent. Recognizing that the young Spaniard was not performing at his best, Goffin took control early on in the match.
Despite being ranked 55th, Goffin, a former world number seven, showcased his experience and skill with some stunning winners while Alcaraz struggled with unforced errors.
Throughout the match, Goffin held a break lead in all three sets. Although Alcaraz managed to make a comeback in the first set, Goffin remained composed and maintained his lead in the subsequent sets.
Reflecting on his victory, Goffin expressed his satisfaction with the performance. “It’s that kind of night that I will remember for sure against Carlos and in a stadium like that. And the night that gave me a lot of confidence to continue,” he said.
On the other hand, Alcaraz was candid in his assessment of his own game. “In general, it was a poor level from me, I didn’t play well,” he admitted. Despite feeling physically prepared for the match, Alcaraz struggled to find his rhythm and confidence on the court.
“I thought I was going to play really good tennis but it didn’t happen, playing a break down in the third set, not feeling great or confident physically, it’s really tough to get back,” he added.
