South Africa is gearing up to potentially host an F1 race as early as 2027 or 2028, with the competition between Gauteng and Cape Town heating up and even incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) into the mix.

The bid to host the Grand Prix in South Africa gained momentum as interested parties submitted their Request for Expression of Interest (RFEOI) earlier this month. The battle for the coveted event is primarily between Gauteng and Cape Town, with the iconic Kyalami Grand Prix circuit in Midrand, north of Johannesburg, being considered as the frontrunner.

Kyalami has taken proactive steps by engaging Apex Circuit Design to prepare for FIA Grade 1 accreditation, a necessary requirement to host a modern Formula 1 event. The circuit is deemed 90% ready and is positioning itself as a strong contender to host the race.

On the other hand, Cape Town has also thrown its hat into the ring with plans for a state-of-the-art racing circuit to host an F1 Grand Prix. Boundless Motorsport, an American-funded, Western Cape Government-backed initiative, is spearheading the bid to bring the high-octane sport to the picturesque city.

AI tool Midjourney, in collaboration with Online Betting Guide, has envisioned the future of Formula 1 with South Africa potentially leading the charge in bringing the sport to Africa. Cape Town’s world-class tourism infrastructure and experience in hosting major events like the FIFA World Cup could give them an edge over their competition.

Furthermore, the stunning backdrop of Table Mountain could provide a breathtaking setting for a potential F1 circuit in Cape Town. However, challenges such as securing government funding and sponsorship, as well as upgrading local road infrastructure, may need to be addressed to make the dream a reality.

While the F1 calendar has seen the addition of 17 new venues since the turn of the millennium, not every proposed location ends up hosting a Grand Prix. South Africa’s bid to host the prestigious event showcases the country’s eagerness to secure a spot on the coveted F1 calendar.

As the competition between Gauteng and Cape Town intensifies, the prospect of an F1 race in South Africa is becoming increasingly tangible. With Kyalami and Cape Town vying for the opportunity to showcase the thrill of Formula 1, racing enthusiasts can look forward to the potential addition of a new and exciting venue to the F1 circuit in the near future.
