The Impact of AI and Deep-Fake Technology on Cybersecurity

By Yash Pillay, Sales Engineer at Trend Micro

Imagine going through a rigorous recruitment process only to discover that the candidate you hired is not real. This scenario, once confined to fictional thrillers, has become a reality with the rise of AI-based tools and deep-fake technology, posing serious security concerns for businesses.

AI enables job candidates to provide accurate responses during interviews, while deep-fake technology can alter their voice and appearance. Remote work has further exacerbated this issue, allowing scammers to infiltrate organizations undetected for extended periods.

As organizations grapple with these sophisticated attacks, it is no surprise that 66% of them see AI and machine learning as the most significant cybersecurity threat in 2025.

The use of AI presents new vulnerabilities within organizations, especially with agentic AI that can make decisions autonomously. This lack of visibility can lead to potential manipulation and exploitation of sensitive information.

Even without agentic AI, employees are accessing high-risk cloud applications, unknowingly introducing security risks. It is crucial to be vigilant about these vulnerabilities and their potential impact.

Proactive Cybersecurity Approach

To address these evolving security challenges, organizations need to adopt an innovative approach to cybersecurity. Trend Micro focuses on several key areas:

Understanding the attack landscape

By evaluating infrastructure and assets, organizations can identify and prioritize risks, focusing efforts where they are most needed. Trend Micro’s Cybertron AI engine predicts and prevents threats, helping IT teams anticipate and mitigate risks proactively.

Evaluating user exposure

Identifying and securing vulnerabilities within the organization, such as inactive user accounts, is crucial to prevent unauthorized access and potential security breaches.

Monitoring security configuration

Properly managing security tools and configurations is essential to detect and prevent threats early on, ensuring that potential issues are addressed before they escalate.

Constantly evolving user education

Educating users on the latest threats and conducting phishing exercises can improve awareness and vigilance, strengthening the organization’s overall security posture.

In the face of evolving cyber threats, organizations must embrace advanced technologies like AI and machine learning to anticipate and mitigate risks effectively. By integrating these tools into a comprehensive cybersecurity framework, businesses can protect their digital environments and maintain a resilient security posture.
