Microsoft’s AI Skilling Day: Paving the Way for Innovation and Growth

Microsoft South Africa is at the forefront of reshaping traditional job functions and creating new opportunities for innovation and growth through artificial intelligence (AI). The recent AI Skilling Day hosted by the software giant brought together over 2,000 stakeholders dedicated to advancing the future of South Africa.

Technological Landscape

Microsoft highlighted the significant changes in the technological landscape over the past three decades, with AI driving the fourth major platform transition. This shift is impacting industries and transforming business operations in South Africa.

As the country accelerates its digital transformation, AI is playing a central role in driving economic growth, job creation, and social development. Microsoft’s AI Skilling Day serves as a platform to showcase the progress made in equipping citizens with the necessary skills to thrive in an AI-driven economy.

Milestones

Since 2024, Microsoft South Africa has launched various AI initiatives, including online courses, certification programs, community outreach, and innovation hubs to bridge the digital divide. Tiara Pathon, AI Skills Director at Microsoft South Africa, emphasized the importance of democratizing AI skills across the country to enable economic participation and transformation.

Collaborations

Collaboration between the government, private sector, and civil society is essential to harness the potential of AI in South Africa. Matlole Mampshika from the Department of Digital Communication and Technologies highlighted the transformative impact of AI on local development challenges and the importance of partnerships to drive sustainable solutions.

Microsoft has partnered with universities, colleges, and NGOs to expand access to AI education, particularly for young people and marginalized communities. The company’s national AI skilling initiatives have already exceeded the target of training one million learners, showcasing its commitment to empowering the workforce.
