Nigerian Sensation Tems Becomes First African Woman to Own Stake in MLS Team
In an unprecedented move, Nigerian-born Afrobeats artist Tems has made history by acquiring a stake in Major League Soccer (MLS) team San Diego FC through her company, The Leading Vibe. This groundbreaking achievement marks her as the first African woman to own a portion of an MLS team.
With a stellar career that includes two Grammy Awards and an Oscar nomination, Tems now joins a prestigious group of investors, which includes World Cup champion Juan Mata.
Expressing her excitement about joining San Diego FC, Tems highlighted the club’s commitment to creativity, culture, and community.
“I am thrilled to join San Diego FC’s ownership group and to be part of a club that celebrates creativity, culture, and the power of community,” Tems expressed.
Alongside Tems, the ownership group of San Diego FC boasts the likes of Juan Mata, a World Cup winner, and entertainment mogul Issa Rae, who recently came on board as a club partner.
Collaborating with Pave Investments, an African private investment firm that previously spearheaded a consortium of investors in NBA Africa in 2021, Tems is set to make a significant impact in the sports realm.
Tunde Folawiyo, the chairman of Pave Investments, and Kwamena Afful, the founding director, are also key figures within the San Diego FC ownership structure, solidifying a diverse and dynamic team.
