Google has recently announced the selection of 15 promising tech startups for its Google for Startups Accelerator: Africa Class 9 program. These startups, originating from countries such as Ghana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, and South Africa, are utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to tackle various challenges across sectors like fintech, agritech, healthtech, and professional services.
In a time where startups are playing a crucial role in addressing critical issues in Africa, these innovators often encounter obstacles when it comes to scaling their operations, particularly in accessing necessary support, mentorship, and funding. Programs like the Google for Startups Accelerator: Africa are essential in providing these opportunities, allowing tech founders and innovators to expand their impact. By leveraging Google’s resources, including advanced AI technologies and a global network of experts, the program aims to empower these startups to not only succeed but also lead in addressing local and global challenges in the AI era.
The selection process for this cohort began in April 2025 and drew nearly 1,500 applications from across the continent. This demonstrates Google’s strong commitment to nurturing Africa’s thriving tech ecosystem and supporting startups in their growth journey.
Folarin Aiyegbusi, Head of Startup Ecosystem, Africa at Google, expressed excitement about the transformative work being done by African startups with AI. He emphasized the program’s goal of shaping an inclusive AI ecosystem across Africa by supporting founders who are building for impact.
The selected startups will participate in a hybrid accelerator program from June 23rd to August 22nd, 2025. They will receive technical mentorship from experienced Google engineers and industry experts, up to $350,000 in Google Cloud credits, and strategic support in AI implementation, product leadership, and business growth. Additionally, they will gain access to a global network of investors, partners, and collaborators, enhancing their reach and impact.
Since its inception in 2018, the Google for Startups Accelerator Africa program has supported 153 startups from 17 African countries. These alumni have collectively raised over $300 million in funding and created more than 3,500 jobs. Google has contributed $5 million in equity-free funding and product credits to support these founders.
The Google for Startups Accelerator: Africa Class 9 cohort includes a diverse range of startups such as AFRIKABAL from Rwanda, Apexloads from Kenya, E-doc Online from Nigeria, GoNomad from Nigeria, Midddleman from Nigeria, Myltura from Nigeria, Pastel from Nigeria, Rapid Human AI from South Africa, Regulon from Ghana, Scandium from Nigeria, Shamba Records from Kenya, Smartel Agri Tech from Rwanda, TOLBI from Senegal, YeneHealth from Ethiopia, and Zerone Analytiqs from Ghana.
