Africa, Meet 7 Black Astronauts!

Africa.com is thrilled to announce the upcoming virtual event titled “Africa, Meet 7 Black Astronauts!” set to take place on March 18, 2025. This groundbreaking event will feature seven Black NASA astronauts who have made significant contributions to space exploration. Students, educators, and inquisitive minds from Africa and beyond are invited to join this inspiring event to hear firsthand from these trailblazing astronauts.

Co-hosted by Africa.com and the Student Sponsorship Programme (SSP), the event aims to showcase the transformative power of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education. It provides a unique opportunity to engage with some of the most accomplished astronauts in the field.

The event will introduce the audience to the following distinguished astronauts:

– Dr. Robert L. Satcher Jr. – NASA astronaut and the first orthopedic surgeon in space
– Capt. Winston E. Scott – NASA astronaut, naval aviator, and experienced spacewalker
– Maj. Gen. Charles F. Bolden Jr. – NASA astronaut, former NASA Administrator, and space shuttle commander
– Dr. Bernard A. Harris Jr. – NASA astronaut, physician, and the first Black American to perform a spacewalk
– Joan E. Higginbotham – NASA astronaut and aerospace engineer who flew aboard Space Shuttle Discovery
– Col. Frederick D. Gregory – NASA astronaut and the first African American to pilot and command a space shuttle mission
– Capt. Robert L. Curbeam Jr. – Veteran NASA astronaut with multiple spaceflights and spacewalks

The event aims to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers in Africa. Teresa Clarke, Chair and CEO of Africa.com, emphasizes the importance of investing in young minds to foster big dreams. The event will feature engaging discussions on the astronauts’ experiences in space, the obstacles they overcame, and the crucial role of STEM education in shaping the future of exploration.
