A New Era: Mahama sworn in as Ghana’s President, Prof Opoku-Agyemang is Veep

John Dramani Mahama Sworn in as President of Ghana for Second Term

His Excellency John Dramani Mahama has officially taken office as the President of the Republic of Ghana for the next four years. The Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkonoo administered the oath of office during a grand presidential inauguration ceremony held at the Black Star Square in Accra on Tuesday, 7th January 2025.

The inauguration ceremony was a momentous occasion attended by several dignitaries, including former Presidents Nana Akufo-Addo and John Agyekum Kufuor, Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, Members of Parliament, and thousands of enthusiastic Ghanaians.

The event also saw the presence of esteemed heads of state and international delegations, such as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria, President Julius Maada Wonie Bio of Sierra Leone, President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, and a delegation from the United States, among others.

John Mahama emerged victorious in the 2024 Presidential Election, securing 6,328,397 votes (56.55%) against the candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Bawumia, who garnered 4,657,304 votes (41.61%).

Prior to Mahama’s swearing-in, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang also took the oath as Ghana’s first female Vice President, marking a historic moment in the country’s political landscape and signaling a significant step towards gender equality in governance.

In his acceptance speech, President Mahama pledged to uphold truthfulness and transparency in his leadership, promising to drive a reset of the economy for the betterment of all Ghanaians. He emphasized the importance of gender equality and women empowerment, citing Professor Opoku-Agyemang’s new role as a catalyst for progress and inclusivity in Ghana’s political arena.

Furthermore, President Mahama underscored his commitment to fostering a conducive business environment through the implementation of a 24-hour economy, aiming to boost economic growth and create opportunities for all citizens.

The inauguration of President John Dramani Mahama marks the beginning of a new chapter for Ghana, filled with promise and hope for a prosperous future under his leadership.
