A City in Crisis: Standing with Goma

As dawn broke over Goma, the rhythmic hum of daily life was shattered by the staccato of gunfire. The M23 rebels, allegedly backed by Rwanda, had breached the city’s defenses, casting a shadow over the lives of its nearly 2 million inhabitants.

A City on Edge

Goma, nestled on the shores of Lake Kivu, has long been a refuge for those fleeing conflict. Today, it finds itself at the epicenter of violence. The M23, a rebel group with roots tracing back to 2012, has reignited its campaign, leading to the displacement of over 400,000 people since the start of 2025.

Faces of the Displaced

Among the throngs of displaced is Amina, a mother of three, who recalls the harrowing night they fled their home: “We left with nothing but the clothes on our backs. The children haven’t eaten in two days.” Her story mirrors that of countless others, seeking solace amidst the chaos.

International Outcry

The international community has not remained silent. The United Nations has temporarily relocated non-essential staff from Goma due to the escalating violence, emphasizing the dire security situation. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has condemned the renewed hostilities, calling for an immediate ceasefire and withdrawal of M23 forces.

A Plea for Peace

As the sun sets over Goma, the resilience of its people shines through. Communities are coming together, offering support to the displaced and wounded. Yet, the path to peace remains uncertain. The world watches, hoping for a resolution that will restore tranquility to this beleaguered city.
