The Office of the President, John Mahama, has taken decisive action following the fatal clash that occurred in Obuasi on Saturday, January 18, 2025. The incident resulted in the tragic loss of eight lives, as illegal miners clashed with armed military personnel at the Anglo-Gold Ashanti mines.

In response to this tragic event, the President has ordered an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the clash. The Ghana Armed Forces reported that the confrontation occurred when a group of illegal miners attempted to enter the Deep Decline at one of the mine shafts in Obuasi.

In a statement issued by the Spokesperson to the President, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Government expressed deep regret over the loss of life and assured the victims and their families that justice will be served. The Government has also directed Anglo-Gold Ashanti to cover all medical expenses for the injured individuals and facilitate the burial of those who lost their lives.

Furthermore, security agencies have been tasked with restoring peace in the area and implementing measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The Government is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens and will not tolerate illegal mining activities that endanger lives and disrupt communities.

The Office of the Presidency has released a statement addressing the Obuasi clash and the actions being taken to address the situation. The Government is committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that those responsible for the violence are held accountable for their actions.

It is imperative that all stakeholders work together to prevent further loss of life and maintain peace and stability in the region. The Government will continue to monitor the situation closely and take necessary steps to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.
