Ethiopia and Somalia Restore Full Diplomatic Relations

Following Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s visit to Addis Ababa and his meeting with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Ethiopia and Somalia have successfully restored full diplomatic relations. The leaders highlighted the significance of mutual trust and cooperation in maintaining regional stability and pledged to strengthen ties by establishing full diplomatic representation in their respective capitals. Discussions between Mohamud and Ahmed also centered on enhancing trade, improving security collaboration, and jointly combating extremist groups.

The reconciliation between the two nations comes after tensions arose from Ethiopia’s 2023 agreement with Somaliland, a region seeking independence, to lease land for a marine base in exchange for recognizing Somaliland’s independence. This move was perceived as a threat to Somalia’s sovereignty, as it considers Somaliland to be part of its territory. In response, Mogadishu expelled Ethiopia’s ambassador and recalled its own envoy. However, both countries are now working towards normalizing relations, following a peace deal brokered by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

It is evident that the restoration of full diplomatic relations between Ethiopia and Somalia marks a significant step towards fostering peace and cooperation in the region. The commitment to mutual trust and collaboration showcased by the leaders sets a positive tone for future engagements and paves the way for enhanced bilateral relations.
