The African National Congress (ANC) and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa recently visited Robben Island in an effort to win back voters in the Western Cape. The party’s January 8 commemoration event was held in the hopes of regaining support in the region.

The ANC has been facing challenges in the Western Cape, where the Democratic Alliance (DA) has traditionally held strong support. With the upcoming 2026 local government elections on the horizon, the ANC is working to strengthen its position in the province.

During the visit to Robben Island, President Ramaphosa emphasized the party’s commitment to addressing key issues facing South Africa, such as the Bela Act and the ongoing challenges at ESKOM. The president highlighted the importance of unity and collaboration in moving the country forward.

Key figures within the ANC, including Fikile Mbalula, have been vocal about the need for a Government of National Unity (GNU) to address the country’s pressing issues. The party’s Integrity Commission has also been actively working to ensure transparency and accountability within the organization.

The January 8 Statement delivered by President Ramaphosa outlined the ANC’s priorities and vision for the future. The party is focused on promoting good governance, economic growth, and social development to improve the lives of all South Africans.

The visit to Robben Island served as a symbolic gesture of the ANC’s commitment to justice, equality, and freedom. As the party prepares for the upcoming elections, it is clear that they are determined to regain the trust and support of voters in the Western Cape.
