Member of Parliament Bernard Ahiafor Elected as First Deputy Speaker of Ghana’s 9th Parliament

Member of Parliament for Akatsi South, Bernard Ahiafor, has been duly elected as the First Deputy Speaker of the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana. Ahiafor was nominated by Majority Chief Whip, Governs Kwame Agbodza, on behalf of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC). His nomination was seconded by Deputy Minority Leader, Patricia Appiagyei.

Ahiafor first joined the 6th Parliament in 2013 on the ticket of the NDC and was subsequently retained in the 7th, 8th, and the current 9th Parliament. In his new role, Ahiafor brings extensive legal expertise, backed by his experience as the Ranking Member on the Constitutional, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs Committee, as well as a member of the Standing Orders and Education Committees in the 8th Parliament.

Andrew Asiamah Amoako Retained as Second Deputy Speaker

Meanwhile, Member of Parliament for Fomena, Andrew Asiamah Amoako, who served as the Second Deputy Speaker in the 8th Parliament, has been retained in the same position for the 9th Parliament. He was nominated by Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, on behalf of the NPP, with support from NDC MP for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu.

Asiamah first entered Parliament in 2017 on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) but contested and won the seat as an independent candidate in 2020. He now returns to the 9th Parliament on the ticket of the NPP.

In the 8th Parliament, Asiamah served as Chairperson of the Members Holding Offices of Profit Committee, and as a member of the Standing Orders, Subsidiary Legislation, and Mines and Energy Committees.

Alban Sumana Bagbin Unanimously Elected as Speaker

Alban Sumana Bagbin was also unanimously elected by Members of Parliament (MPs) from both the ruling NDC and the opposition NPP as Speaker of the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana. The Speaker proceeded to swear in all 275 Members of Parliament.
