The Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially announced that Senior High Schools (SHSs) will resume classes on January 3, 2025, in accordance with the 2024/25 academic calendar. This decision comes after concerns raised by the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) regarding unresolved financial issues affecting school operations.
In a press release issued on January 2, 2025, the GES confirmed that despite financial challenges, the academic calendar will proceed as planned. Cassandra Twum Ampofo, Head of the Public Relations Unit at GES, emphasized that students are expected to return to school on January 3, 2025. Additionally, primary and Junior High Schools will reopen on January 8, 2025.
Acknowledging the financial struggles faced by many schools, the GES recognized CHASS’s concerns regarding outstanding debts related to food supplies and operational expenses. CHASS had called for a delay in the reopening date to allow for the resolution of these financial issues, which have caused frustration among school heads.
Ms. Twum Ampofo reassured the public that the GES is actively collaborating with the Ministry of Education to address these financial challenges promptly. She stated, “We are working closely with the Ministry to resolve these issues as soon as possible.”
The GES urged all stakeholders, including students, parents, and teachers, to prepare for the reopening as scheduled and remain optimistic about the resolution of financial difficulties. This announcement ensures that the academic year will commence as planned, despite the financial obstacles faced by schools.
The GES’s commitment to resolving financial issues demonstrates its dedication to ensuring a smooth start to the academic year. By prioritizing the needs of students and schools, the GES aims to provide a conducive learning environment for all stakeholders involved in the education sector.
