Skin disorders can be challenging to diagnose and treat, especially for people of color. Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Diego Ruiz Dasilva emphasizes the importance of taking an individualized approach to care for people of color with skin disorders. This approach is crucial for getting the right diagnosis and proper treatment.

One patient, Michael, struggled with uncontrolled eczema for nearly 15 years before finding relief with Dr. Ruiz Dasilva. Eczema can present differently on skin of color, often leading to misdiagnosis. Symptoms like hyperpigmentation, skin-colored bumps, and dry patches may be less obvious on darker skin tones compared to the red, oozing appearance on lighter skin.

Living with eczema can be emotionally and physically challenging. Michael felt self-conscious about his skin’s appearance and constant need to scratch. Finding the right treatment was a priority for him, and keeping detailed records of his medical history proved crucial in his journey to getting proper care.

Dr. Ruiz Dasilva stresses the importance of finding a doctor who truly listens to your concerns. By openly sharing your struggles and symptoms, you can work together to find the best treatment plan. In Michael’s case, Dr. Ruiz Dasilva prescribed RINVOQ, a medication specifically for moderate to severe eczema in adults and children over 12 years old. Within days of starting the treatment, Michael noticed a significant improvement in his itch and rash.

It’s essential to understand the potential risks and side effects of RINVOQ, including serious infections, increased risk of certain cancers, and cardiovascular events. Patients should inform their healthcare provider about any existing medical conditions, medications, or allergies before starting RINVOQ.

If you’re struggling with eczema and seeking personalized care, discussing RINVOQ with your doctor may be a viable option. Remember to follow your doctor’s instructions carefully and report any unusual symptoms or side effects during treatment. By working closely with a healthcare provider who listens and understands your unique needs, you can find relief from skin disorders like eczema.
