The reconstruction of two primary schools in Hawzen District of Tigray Region has brought about a positive change in the learning environment for students. The Megab Primary School and Mariam Zala Primary School underwent successful reconstruction as part of the Government of Ethiopia’s Response-Recovery-Resilience for Conflict Affected Communities in Ethiopia (3R4CACE) Project, which is funded by the World Bank and executed by UNOPS. This initiative has greatly enhanced the educational conditions for over 1,800 students.

Both schools were severely damaged and were prioritized for infrastructure recovery under the project. The Mariam Zala Primary School now boasts two new block buildings with eight classrooms and an administrative building, while Megab Primary School has been provided with a block building housing four classrooms, each accommodating a minimum of 50 students. Additionally, both schools now feature hybrid toilet facilities with septic tanks and soakaway pits, upgraded water supply systems, and enhanced electrical systems. The reconstruction efforts also included the installation of fences, walkways, water points, and landscaping. A new gate was constructed for Mariam Zala Primary School, further improving the school’s infrastructure.

The reconstruction work has ensured that both schools have improved sanitation facilities and inclusive amenities for students with disabilities. Following the completion of the project, the schools are better equipped to accommodate a larger student population, creating a conducive learning environment for all.

This initiative highlights the commitment of the Government of Ethiopia, the World Bank, and UNOPS in improving educational infrastructure and facilities in conflict-affected communities. The successful reconstruction of these two primary schools in Hawzen District is a significant step towards providing quality education to students in the region.
