‘Maintaining focus and resilience key for Sundowns left-back, Divine Lunga’

Divine Lunga has shed light on his recent resurgence in form and the subtle adjustments within the team following the appointment of Miguel Cardsoso in place of Manqoba Mngqithi.

The Mamelodi Sundowns have enjoyed consecutive victories against Raja Casablanca and Stellenbosch FC under the guidance of the new Portuguese coach.

Looking to finish the year on a high note, the Brazilians are gearing up for crucial Betway Premiership clashes against AmaZulu and Richards Bay, with their first test set to take place at Moses Mabhida Stadium against AmaZulu on Tuesday, followed by a challenging away fixture against the Natal Rich Boyz on Saturday.

‘Maintaining composure and learning from mistakes’

“There hasn’t been much of a difference since the coaching change, it’s all about absorbing the coach’s instructions and implementing them effectively for improved performance,” Lunga shared on Radio 2000.

“During training sessions, we focus on ball retention to draw in our opponents and exploit the spaces behind them. It’s a strategy that has benefited the team, and the players are adapting well to it.

“Coach Cardoso emphasizes the importance of not being afraid to make mistakes. If we do make an error, we must not dwell on it but instead, remain composed, regroup, and continue to strive for success. Confidence in our abilities and maintaining a positive mindset is crucial as any lapse in concentration can be capitalized on by our opponents.”

Lunga expressed that adjusting to Cardoso’s tactical approach was not challenging, and the coach has also introduced squad rotation since his arrival. The Zimbabwean defender delivered a standout performance in the narrow 1-0 victory over Stellenbosch.

‘Seizing opportunities at Sundowns’

“Adapting to the coach’s tactics comes naturally as we train together and focus on our combinations. Effective communication is key, and we displayed that in our recent match,” Lunga added.

“Playing for Sundowns offers a platform for players to showcase their talents, but it also comes with fierce competition for starting spots. When given a chance, one must seize it with both hands as there are numerous players vying for the same opportunity. Complacency is not an option at a club like Sundowns.”

As the year draws to a close, Lunga and his teammates are determined to maintain their focus, resilience, and hunger for success under the guidance of Cardsoso as they look to navigate through the challenges that lie ahead in the Betway Premiership.
