During a thanksgiving service at the Assemblies of God Ringway Gospel Centre in Accra on Sunday, 15 December 2024, President-elect John Mahama expressed his concerns over the misuse of power by Ghana’s political elite, including himself. He highlighted the growing arrogance and selfishness within the leadership class, emphasizing that politicians often forget that their authority comes from the people who elect them and ultimately from God.

Since 1992, we have practiced democracy. Over time, the political elites, including myself, whom God has blessed with the opportunity to lead this country, have become increasingly arrogant and selfish. We have mistakenly believed that the power we wield over the people belongs to us and failed to recognize that it is a temporary gift from God.

Reflecting on the recent general elections and the significant loss suffered by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), President-elect Mahama described the outcome as a crucial lesson for all politicians. He stressed the importance of leaders being mindful of their duty to the electorate, who hold the power to remove them from office if they are dissatisfied with governance.

God has shown us that power belongs to the people, and when they have had enough, they will demonstrate that power belongs to them and that it is God who has bestowed it upon them.

President-elect Mahama warned his incoming government not to repeat the mistakes of their predecessors and reminded them of the consequences of neglecting the needs and wishes of the Ghanaian people.

As our colleagues in the NPP may be reeling from their loss, it should serve as a lesson to those of us entering government that the same fate awaits if we do not prioritize serving the people above all else.

He also cautioned party supporters and potential appointees that only those willing to serve the Ghanaian people with humility and diligence will be considered for positions in his government.

I have been approached by individuals seeking various positions, and I want to make it clear that serving in my government will not be easy. If you are not prepared to serve the people with humility and dedication, then do not seek a role in our administration.

President-elect Mahama’s message underscores his commitment to reshaping leadership in Ghana by prioritizing service over personal gain. As he prepares to take office, his words serve as a reminder to his team and the broader political class that the true authority lies with the people.

His speech comes at a critical juncture as Ghana reflects on the lessons from the 2024 elections and looks forward to a new era of governance under his leadership.
