Derreck Johnson, a childhood friend of Harris, told the New Yorker Harris “fell in with a group of friends who were bound for historically black colleges” in her late teens. Fully embracing her African American culture, teenage Harris moved across the country to attend Howard University in the 1980s. She majored in political science and economics and joined Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
