Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame recently hosted Professor Kingsley Chiedu Moghalu, the President of the African School of Governance (ASG), at Urugwiro Village in Kigali. The meeting emphasized President Kagame’s dedication to promoting transformative governance and leadership across the continent, as both Co-Founder of ASG and as President of Rwanda, Host Country of ASG.
The African School of Governance, which was unveiled in October 2024 and is based in Kigali, has a mission to equip emerging African leaders with the necessary knowledge and skills to drive the continent’s development. The institution will offer graduate programs in policy, research, governance, leadership, and management, with the goal of nurturing the next generation of visionary African leaders.
President Kagame emphasized the significance of ASG, stating that the institution will “carry the aspirations of the African continent”. He pointed out that ASG was established because previous initiatives to rapidly develop Africa have not yielded sufficient tangible outcomes relative to the pace of needed change.
ASG aims to bridge this gap through teaching, research, and advocacy, with the goal of effecting real change in the lives of Africans. The key to this transformation lies in a mindset shift among Africans regarding their identity and confidence in a competitive world, as well as in the capacity for effective governance based on knowledge and skills to translate intentions into concrete results.
During the meeting, Professor Moghalu updated President Kagame on the accreditation process for ASG, recruitment of faculty and staff, plans for student recruitment from across Africa, and the upcoming “Grand Launch” of ASG in January 2025. The institution is set to open its doors to full-time and executive Master of Public Administration (MPA) students in September 2025, with resource mobilization efforts in progress.
“It is an honor to have had an audience with the Rwandan President and Co-founder of the African School of Governance, H.E Paul Kagame, this afternoon. I deeply appreciate his vision and support for the school and his commitment to Africa’s progress and transformation,” said Prof. Moghalu, expressing gratitude for President Kagame’s strong backing.
The African School of Governance is poised to play a crucial role in addressing Africa’s leadership and governance challenges, promoting good governance, and advancing sustainable development.
