"am I dreaming?" – Mahama shocked by massive crowd in Kumasi

The Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, was overwhelmed by the massive turnout of supporters at his campaign rally in the Ashanti Region. Thousands of NDC supporters, dressed in party colours, flooded the streets of Kumasi on Sunday, 1 December, for a walk dubbed “Enti Asanteman aseda ni?” which translates to “Is this the thank you the people of the Ashanti Region get?”

This walk is part of the NDC’s strategy to garner voter support as they aim to secure over 30% of votes in the Ashanti Region, which is traditionally dominated by the ruling NPP.

Addressing the enthusiastic crowd, Mr Mahama expressed his surprise at the turnout, stating, “Am I dreaming? Is this Kumasi? Is this the Ashanti Region? Eiii, this is why Dr Bawumia and his supporters are having sleepless nights!”

He went on to criticize the ruling NPP for what he perceived as unfair treatment of the region, despite it being a stronghold for the party. Mahama stated, “To be honest, the NPP has not treated Asanteman fairly. This region provides the majority of their votes nationwide, yet most of the projects they promised remain uncompleted. In eight years, they achieved little, and now, with elections approaching, they are rushing to finish projects. It’s all a scam.”

Mahama also took a swipe at the NPP’s presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, accusing him of attempting to sabotage the NDC’s campaign in the Ashanti Region. He mocked Bawumia for allegedly campaigning in the region after the NDC had postponed their visit to avoid clashes.

In response, Dr Bawumia fired back at Mahama during his own tour of the Ashanti Region, criticizing him for allegedly dodging a debate ahead of the elections. The banter between the two candidates highlights the intense atmosphere as Ghana prepares for the crucial presidential and parliamentary elections on Saturday, 7 December.

The rivalry between the NDC and NPP is heating up as the election draws near, with both parties vying for support in key regions like the Ashanti Region. The outcome of the election will have far-reaching implications for the future of Ghana, and the competition between Mahama and Bawumia is set to intensify in the coming days.

As the campaign trail heats up, Ghanaians are eagerly awaiting the chance to cast their votes and have their voices heard in shaping the future of their country. Stay tuned for more updates on the Ghanaian election as the countdown to December 7 continues.
