Fraud and scams are a growing threat that requires a united effort across all sectors and borders. Meta, in partnership with the South African Fraud Prevention Service (SAFPS), is taking proactive steps to raise awareness and educate South Africans on how to protect themselves from online scams and fraud.

Nazia Karrim, Head of Product Development at SAFPS, emphasizes that combating fraud and scams cannot be done in isolation. It requires a collaborative approach across various industries and countries to protect communities from this ever-evolving threat.

Scammers are constantly evolving their tactics to deceive individuals for financial gain or personal information, affecting every industry. Meta recognizes the importance of partnering with businesses, local authorities, experts, and law enforcement officials to combat these criminals. The company is investing in detection and enforcement to stop scams across its platforms, while also maintaining strict policies against scam content and launching consumer-education campaigns.

To enhance online safety, users are advised to verify information by checking for the blue verification tick on profiles, be cautious of suspicious links and attachments that may contain malware, secure their accounts with strong passwords and Two-Factor Authentication, monitor friend requests and messages for any red flags, and report any suspicious activity.

By utilizing Meta’s tools such as the Privacy Centre, Two-Factor Authentication, and Security Checkup, users can enhance their online safety and reduce their exposure to scams. Staying informed and protected is key to ensuring a safer digital experience for all. By following these essential tips and making the most of available resources, individuals can safeguard themselves and their loved ones from falling victim to online scams.
