Kenya Cancels Multi-Million Dollar Deals with Adani Group Amid Corruption Allegations

Following the indictment of billionaire Gautam Adani in New York, Kenya’s President William Ruto announced the cancellation of controversial multimillion-dollar deals in the energy, transport, and health sectors. This decision was made during Ruto’s state of the nation address to parliament, citing the emergence of “credible information on corruption.”

The US Department of Justice has accused Adani of orchestrating a scheme to pay over $250 million in bribes to Indian government officials to secure solar energy supply contracts, as well as misleading US investors to finance the project. Adani Group has vehemently denied these allegations.

Kenya’s public-private partnerships act prohibits the government from engaging with entities involved in corruption, including those who have been “sued or convicted for acts of corruption” in various jurisdictions.
