Trump’s Africa Policy Shifts Focus to Economic Interests

As a potential second term for President Trump looms, a shift towards a more “transactional and pragmatic” approach to Africa is anticipated. This new strategy is expected to prioritize economic interests over cultural or political issues. Supporters of the former president believe that Trump will take a strong stance against Chinese influence in Africa and work towards securing African supply chains for essential minerals used in green energy technologies.

Experts like J. Peter Pham view this approach as crucial for US economic security and the advancement of its technology industry. While there may be similarities in the core objectives of US-Africa policy between the Republican and Democratic parties, conservative critics of the Biden administration argue that the emphasis on social issues has opened the door for rivals like China and Russia to expand their presence in Africa.

Despite differing opinions on policy priorities, projects initiated during Trump’s administration, such as the Lobito Corridor, are regarded as potential models for future collaboration between the US and Africa. These initiatives showcase the potential for mutually beneficial partnerships that could drive economic growth and development on the continent.
