The NBA is currently investigating an altercation that took place in the Philadelphia 76ers locker room between star player Joel Embiid and Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Marcus Hayes. The incident occurred after the 76ers suffered a loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday night, sparking a heated confrontation between Embiid and Hayes.

Embiid was visibly angry and confronted Hayes over columns he had written questioning the All-Star center’s professionalism and physical condition. Hayes had referenced Embiid’s late brother and his son in his articles, suggesting that Embiid was not in shape after participating in the Paris Olympics and had yet to play for the 76ers this season.

As reporters entered the locker room to speak with players, Embiid directly addressed Hayes, warning him not to bring up his family members again. Embiid used profanity and expressed his frustration with the criticism he has received from the media. Hayes attempted to apologize, but Embiid was not receptive, stating that this was not the first time he had been targeted by reporters.

The situation escalated when Embiid pushed Hayes on the shoulder, prompting team security to intervene and attempt to diffuse the tension. Despite efforts to keep the incident under wraps, Embiid was unapologetic and defiant, asserting that he does not care what the media reports.

This altercation came after Embiid had publicly called out Hayes during a press conference, addressing the columnist as “Marcus, whatever his name is” and defending his absence from the team. Hayes had previously written a story questioning Embiid’s commitment to the 76ers and suggesting that fans should receive refunds when Embiid does not play.

It remains unclear when Embiid will return to the court, and the NBA’s investigation will determine if any disciplinary action is necessary. The incident has highlighted the tensions between players and the media, as well as the challenges of managing public perceptions in professional sports.
