Was Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo’s Removal Politically Motivated?
There has been speculation that the recent removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo was politically motivated. However, one must question whether her track record of delivering 11:0 unanimous decisions at the Supreme Court was solely based on her technical and vocational skills. It has been said that karma originates from Kyebi, and actions have consequences that can come back to haunt us.
When the Speaker of Parliament declared seats vacant, the Supreme Court promptly granted a stay of execution. Yet, the same urgency was not shown in the SALL parliamentary case. It is believed that the Chief Justice deliberately delayed the case because she knew that a ruling in favor of the NDC would have shifted the balance of power in Parliament.
For four years, the people of SALL were denied representation in Parliament, despite being entitled to it under Article 17 of the Constitution. This injustice was a result of personal interests taking precedence over the rights of citizens.
This serves as a reminder that abusing one’s power can have repercussions. When you mistreat people in one area, don’t be surprised if they seek retribution in another. It is a lesson that Chief Justice Torkonoo has learned the hard way.
It is disheartening to see someone like Chief Justice Torkonoo, hailing from Gomoa Mpota, sacrifice her integrity for political gain. Like many others in government positions, she has compromised her principles for the sake of pleasing those in power.
Ultimately, we must all be held accountable for our actions, regardless of our status or affiliations. Let Chief Justice Torkonoo’s story serve as a cautionary tale for those in positions of authority.
