Minister Gayton McKenzie Provides Financial Assistance to Nandi Nyembe and Glen Gabela
Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture Gayton McKenzie has responded to criticism regarding his support for the late actress Nandi Nyembe. He revealed that he personally assisted Nyembe earlier this year and continues to aid her family with funeral arrangements.
McKenzie disclosed that he gave Nyembe R20,000 in April after learning about her financial difficulties. He expressed his commitment to helping her family during this challenging time.
Upon Nyembe’s passing, McKenzie flew from Cape Town to support her children. He shared that he helped move Nyembe’s body from the state morgue to a suitable mortuary and provided additional financial assistance to her daughter for hosting guests.
The minister emphasized that his department covered the entire cost of Nyembe’s funeral. He clarified that the financial aid he provided came from his personal funds and not government resources.
In addition to Nyembe, McKenzie also extended support to actor Glen Gabela. After seeing Gabela’s living conditions online, he arranged for contractors to renovate the actor’s home. He also gave Gabela R10,000 for groceries, purchased furniture, and covered renovation expenses.
McKenzie defended his actions, stating that he actively works to improve the lives of artists and their families. He highlighted upcoming government reforms that will offer medical care, funeral cover, and inheritance benefits to artists’ families.
As Minister McKenzie continues to advocate for the welfare of artists, his efforts to provide financial assistance to Nandi Nyembe and Glen Gabela demonstrate his dedication to supporting the arts and culture community.
