First Lady of the United Denominations Originating from the Lighthouse Group of Churches, Episcopal Sister Adelaide Heward-Mills has emphasized the importance of avoiding conflicts over roles within marriage. In a recent interview at the 2025 Woman Redefined Conference in Accra, Heward-Mills challenged traditional gender expectations by suggesting that roles should be based on individual strengths rather than societal norms.
Reflecting on her own family dynamics, Heward-Mills shared, “My father took on tasks like supervising building, painting, and gardening, while my mother managed the kitchen. It’s not about strict gender roles but rather about playing to your strengths and finding a division of labor that works for both partners.”
She also highlighted the importance of utilizing professional help and labor-saving devices to ease household responsibilities. “The virtuous woman had servants in the past, but now we have modern tools like washing machines and dishwashers. Planning and delegating tasks can also involve training children to contribute to household chores,” she explained.
Addressing the issue of external influences on marriage dynamics, Heward-Mills cautioned against unnecessary gender battles. She stressed the need for couples to approach these discussions objectively and not be swayed by societal pressures.
The Woman Redefined Conference, held on June 31, 2025, at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra, aimed to empower and uplift women from diverse backgrounds. The event featured breakout sessions, exhibitions, performances, and networking opportunities designed to celebrate women’s achievements.
By encouraging open communication, mutual respect, and a shared understanding of household responsibilities, Heward-Mills hopes to help couples navigate potential conflicts and build stronger, more harmonious relationships.
