ECOWAS Calls for Restraint and Dialogue in Togo Amid Social Unrest

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has expressed deep concern over the recent wave of social unrest in Togo, particularly in the capital, Lomé, which has led to both human casualties and material damage.

Call for Dialogue

In a statement issued by its Commission in Abuja, ECOWAS called on all parties involved to exercise restraint and prioritise dialogue in order to restore calm and safeguard national cohesion. The regional body stressed that a peaceful socio-political and economic environment is essential for the sustainable development of the Togolese Republic.

Commitment to Peace

The ECOWAS Commission reaffirmed its commitment to supporting efforts aimed at preserving peace and stability in Togo. It also extended its sympathies to those affected by the demonstrations and affirmed its readiness to assist in any initiative that fosters social harmony.

Urging Constructive Engagement

The unrest in Togo comes amid growing public frustration, though the precise triggers of the protests remain under investigation. ECOWAS has urged all stakeholders to engage constructively and work toward a resolution that upholds democratic principles and the rule of law.

This article has been rewritten to reflect the recent call for restraint and dialogue in Togo by ECOWAS. The regional body is actively working towards a peaceful resolution to the social unrest in the country, emphasizing the importance of maintaining national cohesion and stability.
