In a recent interview on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Professor Godfred Bokpin, a Finance professor at the University of Ghana Business School, voiced his support for the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission’s (GTEC) initiative to educate the public on the proper use of honorary titles.
Professor Bokpin emphasized the importance of sensitization, stating that many individuals who receive honorary titles may not fully understand the implications of such distinctions. He commended GTEC for their efforts in raising awareness and educating the public on this matter.
Comparing the practices in Ghana to those in other countries, the professor highlighted that recipients of honorary doctorates abroad often do not use the title of “Doctor” in their everyday lives, focusing instead on their contributions and achievements.
He criticized the culture in Ghana that places a high value on titles over performance and productivity, attributing this to the country’s incentive structures. According to Professor Bokpin, the pursuit of titles has overshadowed the pursuit of excellence in Ghana.
He expressed concern that titles have become a status symbol in Ghana, with individuals collecting multiple degrees without necessarily demonstrating a corresponding level of performance or productivity.
Ultimately, Professor Bokpin emphasized the need for a shift in mindset towards valuing performance and productivity over titles and accolades. He urged individuals to focus on their output and contributions rather than just the titles they hold.
