Ghana’s Democracy Cup Football Match Gets New Date

In a recent announcement, Ghana’s parliamentary leadership has revealed a change in plans for the highly anticipated Democracy Cup football match.

Originally set to take place on August 29 at the Accra Sports Stadium, the clash between rival clubs Accra Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics has been rescheduled to September 5. The venue has also been shifted to the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.

The decision to move the match was made after careful deliberation to ensure better facilities, enhanced security measures, and an overall improved experience for all attendees, as stated in a release by Parliament.

The Democracy Cup, now in its second edition, continues to be a key parliamentary tradition aimed at fostering civic engagement and promoting national unity through the medium of football. Last year’s inaugural match saw Kumasi Asante Kotoko emerge victorious over Hearts of Oak to claim the inaugural trophy.

In addition to the coveted trophy, the winning team of this year’s Democracy Cup will also earn the opportunity to represent Ghana in a prestigious three-team tournament scheduled to take place in the United States in May 2026, as confirmed by the Ghana Football Association.
