The 2025 Hollywoodbets Durban July attracted a record-breaking crowd of fashion enthusiasts, punters, and revellers at the Greyville Racecourse. This annual event, known as the largest horseracing event in Africa, showcased a combination of high-stakes horse racing, bold fashion statements, and vibrant cultural expressions all under the theme “Marvels of Mzansi”.

In the highlight of the day, The Real Prince emerged victorious in the Grade One R5 million race, narrowly defeating the race favorite Eight On Eighteen in a thrilling finish. Ridden by Craig Zackey and trained by Dean Kannemeyer, The Real Prince’s victory was a testament to his ability to stay the 2200m trip of the July. This win marked Kannemeyer’s fourth July victory and his second for Lady Christine Laidlaw and Khaya Stables.

The race saw Oriental Charm set the early pace, keeping the field bunched up before Eight On Eighteen surged ahead coming into the final turn. However, Zackey’s strategic ride on The Real Prince allowed him to close the gap and ultimately claim the victory in a head-to-head finish.

The event was not just about horse racing, as the infield was alive with fierce competition in the fashion stakes. Fashionistas competed in categories such as Most Striking Couple, Classic Racewear – Female, Classic Racewear – Male, and Exceptional Raceday Hat or Fascinator. Judges faced a tough task selecting winners from the pool of talent, with Durban designer Pregasen Govender making a notable comeback with designs inspired by the Indian Ocean, traditional jewelry, Japanese design elements, and local flora.

In the main fashion categories, winners included Happiness Mkhwanazi for Classic Racewear – Female, Mnotho Ngema for Classic Racewear – Male, and Pamela Shabane and Larnelle Maddocks for Most Striking Couple. The Exceptional Raceday Hat or Fascinator category was won by Nirvana Nolene.

The 2025 Hollywoodbets Durban July set new records in terms of economic impact, with estimates indicating a contribution of approximately R700 million to the city’s GDP. Attendance peaked at around 50,000 fans, and betting activity reached new heights with record pools in tote betting, including a R20 million jackpot and a R15 million Pick 6 carryover. Overall, the event was a resounding success, combining thrilling horse racing action with high fashion and cultural flair.
