A new $2 million equity-free prize program aims to boost AI and manufacturing in Africa
A groundbreaking $2 million equity-free prize program, supported by South African billionaire Dr. Patrice Motsepe and the Milken Institute, is setting its sights on artificial intelligence and manufacturing as key drivers of Africa’s technological advancement.
Unveiled at the 2025 Milken Institute Global Conference in Los Angeles, the Milken-Motsepe Prize in AI and Manufacturing is the latest edition in a series of innovation challenges aimed at addressing Africa’s structural issues through technology. This particular round places a strong emphasis on AI and smart manufacturing, sectors that have seen limited African involvement despite global growth.
The $2 million prize pool, which includes a $1 million grand prize, is designed to support entrepreneurs developing AI-powered technologies that enhance local production, strengthen supply chains, and create high-quality industrial jobs across the continent. Applications are open worldwide until July 31, 2025.
Dr. Emily Musil, Managing Director of Environmental and Social Innovation at the Milken Institute, expressed excitement about the potential impact of bold entrepreneurs in revolutionizing the African manufacturing sector through the integration of AI and advanced technologies.
Despite being home to nearly 18% of the global population, Africa contributes less than 2% to global manufacturing output, leading to a heavy reliance on imports and vulnerability to international economic fluctuations. In South Africa, the need for re-industrialization is particularly urgent, as evidenced by sluggish GDP growth and a struggling manufacturing sector.
The Prize aims to fund innovative solutions that leverage AI, smart-factory tools, and data analytics to optimize production, reduce waste, and localize value chains. These solutions should also improve access to essential goods, create employment opportunities, and enhance export potential across African economies.
While the competition is open to global applicants, its primary focus remains on Africa. Past editions of the prize program have supported over 50 startups from various sectors, impacting over 530,000 lives and attracting additional investment. The latest prize seeks to propel African industrialization forward and contribute to sustainable growth.
The Milken-Motsepe Innovation Prize series, launched in 2021, is a collaborative effort between the Motsepe Foundation and the Milken Institute. Unlike traditional grants, these prizes do not require equity, welcome global participation, and support innovation at all stages of development.
