Spain Dominates Portugal 5-0 in Emotional Women’s Euro 2025 Opener

The Women’s Euro 2025 tournament kicked off with a powerful performance from Spain, who crushed Portugal 5-0 in their Group B opener. The match was overshadowed by grief as both teams paid tribute to Portuguese men’s international player, Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away in a car accident.

The reigning world champions wasted no time in asserting their dominance, scoring two quick goals within the first seven minutes of the game. Esther Gonzalez and Vicky Lopez found the back of the net early on, setting the stage for a commanding display by Spain.

Additional goals from Alexia Putellas, a second from Gonzalez, and a late header by Cristina Martin-Prieto sealed the victory for Spain.

Spain’s coach, Montse Tome, praised her team’s quick start and their ability to respond to Portugal’s attacking style. The Spanish team’s performance was exceptional, leaving Tome very pleased with their performance.

Despite the emotional atmosphere surrounding the match, Spain’s victory propelled them to the top of the group standings on goal difference, following Italy’s narrow 1-0 win against Belgium.

Before the game, Portuguese fans and players paid tribute to Jota, with supporters marching to the stadium carrying banners and chanting in his memory. A moment of silence was observed at the Wankdorf Stadium, with fans holding signs that read “Rest in Peace” and “Thanks for everything.”

Portugal’s coach, Francisco Neto, expressed his condolences to Jota and his family, highlighting the impact the player had on both the men’s and women’s teams. The Portuguese team faced a tough day on the field, compounded by the early goals from Spain.

Spain’s dominance continued throughout the match, with captain Putellas scoring before halftime and Gonzalez adding another goal after the break. The return of Aitana Bonmati from viral meningitis provided a further boost for Spain, as they aim to secure their first women’s European title.

Martin-Prieto capped off the emphatic win with a late header, securing a convincing victory for Spain. In the earlier match of the day, Italy secured a 1-0 win against Belgium, positioning themselves well for a spot in the quarter-finals.

Spain’s commanding performance against Portugal sets them up as strong contenders in the Women’s Euro 2025 tournament, with their eyes set on claiming the championship title.
