7 Conversations to Avoid on a First Date

First dates can be nerve-wracking enough without adding unnecessary stress with inappropriate conversations. It’s important to be mindful of what you say in order to make a good impression and set the right tone for the evening. Here are seven conversations to steer clear of on a first date:

1. “I’m just looking for something fun… unless you change my mind.”

Expressing mixed signals early on can create anxiety and mistrust. It implies emotional unavailability and a lack of respect for the other person’s intentions. It’s important to be clear and honest about your intentions from the start.

2. “My ex used to…” or “You remind me of my ex.”

Comparing your date to an ex-partner is a surefire way to ruin the evening. Leave your past relationships out of the conversation and focus on getting to know the person in front of you. Mentioning an ex can make your date feel like they are being compared rather than appreciated for who they are.

3. “I looked you up.”

Admitting to cyberstalking your date is a major turn-off. It’s best to let things unfold naturally and avoid oversharing information that may make your date feel uncomfortable or violated.

4. “I really do not like……”

Avoid sharing strong opinions on sensitive topics like politics, religion, or social issues. Expressions of intolerance can signal emotional rigidity and lack of empathy, which are not attractive qualities in a potential partner.

5. “So, how much do you earn?”

Avoid making the conversation transactional by asking about money or material possessions. This can come across as judgmental and may make your date feel undervalued. Focus on getting to know the person rather than their financial status.

6. “I’ve had more than 25 sexual partners.”

Sharing intimate details about your past relationships or sexual history too soon can be off-putting. It’s important to establish trust and connection before delving into such personal topics.

7. “I’m just wanting to get married and have kids. Soon”

Putting pressure on your date by discussing marriage and children early on can be overwhelming. It’s important to take things slow and allow the relationship to develop naturally without rushing into long-term commitments.

By avoiding these seven conversations, you can ensure a more enjoyable and successful first date experience. Remember to be respectful, open-minded, and genuine in your interactions to make a positive impression on your potential partner.
